Government: Since the Civil War,
the government of Leazolind has seen a great many changes. A
triumvirate consisting of the three major powers in the kingdom now
rules it. The rulers are the head of the military, a seven
star general, presently held by General Regis Dexterous, the Queen
Priestess, Lindra Leazolind, 22nd ruler and High Priestess of the
Church of Kinthur, who ruled alone prior to the civil war. The
position of Queen Priestess is passed from mother to daughter, the
heir being selected by the present ruler and approved by the advising
council of priests/priestesses. Thirdly is the head of the Arcane
Order, who monitors and directs all forms of arcane spell casters
within the kingdom. Eckrich Gillingham presently holds
this position, which he took by force from his predecessor during
the civil war.
Income: The Kingdom of Leazolind gains a
majority of its monies from road taxes applied to caravans traveling
the coast. Leazolind has the south most land based
trading route and the most well guarded roads across the Sleeping
River. In addition, the fertile land produces enough
agricultural products for export and trade. The western regions
of the kingdom are home to some of the best horse breeds in the world
that bring a high price from other kingdoms.
Standing Army: Leazolind maintains a small standing
army of 3,000 infantry soldiers and the best-trained cavalry (on
land and in the air) in the civilized world, the exact number of
which is kept secret. In addition, the kingdom can call on
a militia of almost 5,000, many of which have been in the service
or received basic training. With the end of the Civil
War, Leazolind can now call on a force of over 250 trained wizards. This
military now ranks Leazolind among the few kingdoms to be contended
with.
Background: Soliel Leazolind founded Leazolind
in 9739, the Year of the Shattered Sight. The capital
city of Arlon was named for her lover who died in battle before the
birth of his children. Soliel gave birth to twins. The
daughter, Tereslea, became High Priestess upon her 25th birthday,
while the son, Theason, became the kingdom’s Master horseman
and Man-At-Arms. This began a tradition of the daughters of
the crown ruling while the sons served to protect the kingdom. In
9985, Year of the Burning Sun, the kingdom repelled an invasion force
of Sun elves. The Celestial City’s council later extended
official apologies and established trade agreements. This standing
treaty with the Celestial Elves has helped Leazolind to join the
ranks of recognized economic powers along the coast. The
currency of Leazolind is now accepted in most port towns and cities
with an even rate of exchange. In 10183 the Queen’s
son conspired with her consort to take the throne. This began
the year long Civil War that ended with the creation of the triumvirate.
Today: Leazolind has succeeded in securing
its eastern and western borders through negotiation and treaty. The
coastal region is patrolled by ships filled with well-trained marines
and is relatively free of pirates. The only remaining threat
to the nation is from the northern borders. To the
northwest are the Noonan grasslands, home to many goblin kinds. The
nature of the creatures makes any attempt at a peaceful coexistence
futile. The northeast border stretches between the
Sleeping River and the Calthos Caverns. The occasional wandering
monster and orc tribe are a constant threat to the kingdom and requires
vigilance on the part of the border towns. These threats
are neither organized nor regular so the kingdom exists in relative
peace, but with a niche filled with adventurers. The
final result of the Civil War has made the kingdom a more tolerant
place for wizards and spell casters, at least officially. Arcane
magic users are still looked upon with awe and fright by the common
man. And with the increase in travelers and traffic (political
strife brings out the odd ones) common people have had to get used
to strange folks and strangers alike. |
